I saw the chiropractor on Monday. Pretty painful treatment as she worked my quads and ITB. But, it was a nice payoff on Tuesday at the track. I went to the track to run 10 – 30 second intervals. The track at the high school has been re-surfaced and I think it just re-opened on Tuesday. With the new orange surface and freshly painted stripes and marks, I felt like I was in Eugene at the Olympic trials.
My thoughts for the workout were to keep the effort challenging but not all out. Something like an 80% effort. My warm-up mile was done at an 8:25 pace. I was feeling good so I went for another mile and ran it an 8:03 pace. I did not feel like I was pushing that hard. I then did 12 – 30 second intervals with a 30 second recovery. By not running the interval too hard, I was able to maintain a good pace during the recovery part. For the interval portion, I covered a little more than 1.5 miles which is a little better than an 8 minute mile. I ended with a 20 minute cool down. I ran in the outside lane and did not keep track of how many laps I ran. In total, it was about a 6 mile workout. Best part was running a somewhat challenging workout pain free.
Seeing how I am injuring myself on interval and tempo runs, I wonder if it is due to pushing those runs too hard. I had fun tonight and I wasn’t exhausted. And, I was running at a quicker pace then an “easy” run. I think I will stick with this approach for the summer and see how I perform in the fall running season.
